Mini Twist Instructions

Hi, Everyone! First, I'd like to welcome my new followers!! :) Thank you!

Well, if you follow me on Twitter, you know I promised you all instructions on how I did my mini twists this past Saturday. I will post all the details with pics below :)

I washed my hair with Mixed Chicks Shampoo, Deep Conditioned with Aubrey Organics White Camellia Conditioner, and then rinsed that out and applied Herbal Essence Totally Twisted. I rinsed my hair again, applied Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-In, and sectioned my hair into 4 sections (2 on each side). I blow-dried my hair on LOW heat. I didn't make it fully dry, only about 80% so that I didn't have shrinkage with my twists.

Now for the actual twists. These are your everyday 2-strand twists, but I made them a lot smaller than usual. The ONLY product I used to twist my hair was my mix of unrefined shea butter and coconut oil. What I do is put about 70% shea butter and 30% coconut oil in a container, heat it slightly in the microwave to melt it a little and mix it up until I get a creamy texture. Whenever I say "shea butter/coconut oil mix", that's it. I didn't use a comb to part my hair, just my fingers. I started from the back and worked my way to the top. Start off by grabbing a section, maybe about a 1-2 inch section of hair. Pin the rest of your up and out of the way. Within that small section, using your fingers grab a small amount of hair to twist. Apply the shea butter/coconut oil mix to those strands and once you've applied it, start your twist. Get as close to the roots as possible. When you get to the end, you can twirl it with your fingers - they don't unravel. Keep doing this until you're done, and that's it! These twists took me 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete. I'm very happy with the end result and plan on keeping these in for 2 weeks, at least.

To preserve the style at night, I just sleep with a satin bonnet. Low-maintenance, protective style. If you have additional questions, feel free to ask!

They look great girlie. I plan to wash my hair today and you've inspired me to mini twist it. I haven't rocked this style in a while n it will be nice not to fuss with my hair for a couple weeks.

Thank You! So glad I inspired someone. I always said "I'll never twist my hair, it takes too long!" - Well I don't have to do my hair for 2 weeks so now I really love this!

Oh my goodness! They look GREAT! Please keep the tips coming. After two years growing out and transitioning, I'm ready to cut the last two inches of relaxer off and get this natural journey REALLY underway and I need DIY tips because I don't want to have to go to the salon all the time!

Great work!

Thanks, Ms. Vee! You did great transitioning for 2 years! And you only have 2 inches of relaxed hair left, that's good! It's fun experimenting and learning your hair.

luv your hair! I just started transitioning and have about an inch of natural hair and 6 or 7 inches of relaxed hair. Will this style work for me? I often have trouble with my ends unraveling.

Hi Brandi! It gets tricky with transitional styles. What keeps the ends of the twists "together" is the fact that my hair is curly and the ends kind of wrap around themselves, holding the twists together. Maybe what could help is when you twist, to just the roll the ends with a roller when you're done to have kind of a spiral curl effect. That might keep them from unraveling so easily.

Hello...i really like how ur twists came out & I have a question??? when u blow dried ur hair..did u stretch ur hair with ur hands to get it to dry like that or did u use a brush or comb?

Thanks & keep up the good work.

Hi Meeksj> Thanks!
This is how I blow dried my hair:

To stretch while blowdrying, I grab the section of hair at the ends and pull it straight, then run the air of the blowdryer up and down the hair shaft (at a distance, maybe 5-6 inches away) until it's mostly dry, then use a comb attachment just on the ends (1-2 run-thru's).

Hi! Your twists have totally inspired me to do twists for the first time this weekend. I have 3b/3c type hair...will these type of twist work on my hair type, I'm concerned the shea butter/coconut oil mix will not provide enough hold.

I loved ur tutorial on the twist and I attempted to do my own twist this past weekend. sadly it looked horrible on my hair. My parts were too big with this itty bitty twist in the middle. I guess my hair isn't as thick as I thought it was. Anyway, in due time, i'll retry this style. Thanks for the tutorial.

Thanks Ladies! :-)

@Siren - Sorry you didn't get the results you were looking for :-( But you should definitely try again! It takes time to learn what will work well for your twists and what won't, but you'll figure out what is best for you. Don't stop experimenting ;-)

Very nice hair style, inspired to try it when I take my braids down. The effort required is daunting but the rewards are great!

These look lovely! Question: did you start your twists with braiding?

KeetaRay said...

Thanks, Chrissy. No I just twist them completely.
