Crochet

Like I said... I want to learn to crochet! But I started before the new year. I did this today on lunch break today, just to practice chain stitching/basic stitches. So, I know now I need to work on getting/keeping my edges straight, but the stitches look a lot better!! Yay!! :)

Enjoy Your Holiday & Re-Evaluate!!

Happy Holidays to everyone celebrating Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah this year!! As the new year of 2010 approaches, I am sure many of you are looking forward to new beginnings and wonderful life changes :-) I don't usually do New Year's Resolutions, BUT lately I've been re-evaluating some things and it just so happens to be about that time for resolutions, sooooo... Just a few of mine: Learn to crochet, take boxing classes, workout more in general, and save more money. Those are the "smaller" goals. I also have some larger ones that are more personal.

Please feel free to share YOUR 2010 Goals!! I look forward to hearing them :-)

Take Care,

Brief Update

Hi, Everyone!!

I have not forgotten about the blog - I've just been extremely busy with work and my business and LIFE. LOL I will be posting and sharing some things soon!! If, for some odd reason, I don't get to post prior to the holidays - Have a blessed and safe and happy Holiday and New Year for 2010. But again, I am sure I will post prior to that ;-)

Hope you're all doing well!!

Mini Updates :-)

On October 29, I posted something about a new lip gloss line called Dope Lips. Well, unfortunately there has been some drama or a misunderstanding (per Teyana's twitter) with her and the other person she was partnering with. So, no more Dope Lips. Darn... I was looking forward to that lip gloss line!

Anywho, I hope you all had a fun and relaxing Thanksgiving Holiday! I enjoyed my time at home (Philadelphia) - I got to see a lot of family and friends that I don't get to see often. Now I am back in MD, back to work tomorrow! Just wanted to check in with everyone :-)

Lastly, here is a pic of my hair. It's been a full year now that I've been natural, and I got my hair trimmed (only the 3rd trim in the entire year) and my sis cornrowed one side. I likey.

Reasons Why I Love My Natural Hair

As I approach my 1 Year Anniversary of being au naturel, I wanted to do a little post listing reasons why I love my natural hair, and I'd also like to hear why YOU love your natural hair (for those of you who are natural, or even those transitioning). Feel free to "tag" yourself and use this on your own blog :-)

Reasons why I love my natural hair...
  1. My hair is healthier and stronger
  2. I no longer have the dry scalp issues I had when I was getting relaxers
  3. It's EASY
  4. It has improved my confidence
  5. I can be out in the rain or take showers w/no worries re: my hair!
  6. I adore my tight/tiny coils and curls
  7. I feel like more of an individual because no one's hair is like mine. No 2 textures are alike!
Leave some comments telling why YOU love your natural hair! :-)

Reactions to My Natural Hair

Hello, Everyone! So someone asked that I post about my experiences and people's reactions since I've gone natural. I made the decision to go natural in May of 2008. My last relaxer was in March 2008 and I did my BC (Big Chop, where you cut off all of your relaxed hair) November 2008 with about 4 inches of new growth. A lot of people told me they liked it. My mother did not. She asked why, then said, "Well, your hair grows fast, so..." My sister, who did my BC, shook her head when she was done and said, "I guess this what people do when they turn 30! You have NO hair!!" Funny thing is, these comments didn't bother me, though - I knew it was a shock. Shoot, I've never had short hair in all my life, it was a shock to me initially but I got used to it in a few minutes and LOVED it. It felt good to not be confined or restricted by my hair. No more stress of touching up my new growth and keeping it straight and "laid". My hair could just... be. And so could I.

Next I went to visit a friend of mine and his parents. I've known them for awhile, about 5-6 years so they know me pretty well. My friend's dad says, "I guess all women go through this, they have to cut their hair and do the natural thing, then they get it permed again." Umm... No. I am not getting another relaxer. This is permanent, and it wasn't just something "to do" for me. OK so all that was on the FIRST day. LOL So yes, you have to have a strong mind, and I knew WAY before I did my BC that I was sure about this. So the comments, although annoying, didn't make me regret my decision.

I met the guy I am currently seeing less than one month post-BC. So obviously HE had no issue. I had very little hair. LOL He still thought I was pretty. ;-) My friends complimented me and to my knowledge no one has said anything mean. One guy DID ask why did I cut my hair, because I was "fine before" (fine as in cute/pretty/whatever!). My reply to him was my hair does not make me, I am the same person and look just as good, if not better, now. He was like, "Yeah, you right. I just gotta get used to it." Sigh... PEOPLE. Again, good thing I have a strong mind ;-)

So. Before cutting my hair I will say I obsessed about natural hair and researched EVERYTHING online about how to care for different hair textures, products to try, I went on YouTube looking at vids of people doing their hair and followed countless hair blogs. All that research, and I learned TONS. Some of my friends said I was doing too much and I didn't need to do "research", to just do it. Mind u, my hair had been relaxed since I was 12 when I BEGGED my mom to give me one so I could have straight hair like my friends (proof that kids don't know sh**!). Anyway, I did my research so when I did my BC I knew what I was doing. It took me very little time to narrow down the products and techniques that would and would not work for me. People complimented my hair and even said things like, "I want to go natural but my hair is not like yours." Wait. Hold up. I have type 4 hair. Afro, kinky hair. VERY VERY tight curl pattern. It's not about having "hair like mine", it's about knowing how to manage YOUR hair. Hence my prior research. Secondly, I DESPISE the whole "good hair/bad hair" terminology and wish people would stop using those words. Healthy hair is good hair.

OK I am rambling but after all was said and done, those SAME people who said I was doing too much with my researching and whatnot, NOW ask me for hair tips and love my hair. They ask me how do I do this and that, and I just look like, "But you said..." LOL Anyway, besides those initial reactions on the first day, and that one male friend with his ignorance, I haven't gotten negative comments, it's been all positive. I see people stare but not in a disgusted way, more like they are wondering "How'd she do that?" I find it hilarious. And ladies, don't think that men won't like you if you cut your hair. Let me tell you, since cutting mine men come at me more than they did when I had a relaxer. Now THAT surprised me! I don't know if it is the fact that I don't look like everyone else, or my confidence level or what, but they definitely approach me more.

Alright, now let's hear some of your experiences. I have 30-something followers so I'd like more than 2-3 comments. LOL Men can comment, too - tell how you feel about women with natural hair. I look forward to ur comments.

Today's curly fro...

OK I should have my blogpost up sometime tonight regarding natural hair reactions - I wanted to post last night but I left my laptop at work :( Here is my hair today. Not a big deal, right? But I have NEVER worn my hair completely out while at work, and only twice outside of work. Weird, I know. But now that I've done it, I'm really feelin' it! So I will be wearing it this way for a minute!

Coming Soon: "Natural Hair Reactions"

Coming Soon: It will be a year that I have been natural on the 22nd of this month. A reader ask that I do a post on my experiences with people's reactions to my natural hair. I felt this was a good time as I've had a year (almost) to hear and see people's reactions, if any. So sometime this week, I'll post. I'd also like you all who are natural to post your comments on your experiences since going natural, as well, on that blog post. Look forward to hearing from you!

Twist Out

I did a twistout Thursday night - but not my usual twistout. This time I made the twists smaller. My hair is really soft and is holding well on Day 2. Here is what I did:

  1. Co-washed (wash w/o shampoo, just conditioner) with Herbal Essence Totally Twisted (fyi: I always put Olive Oil in my conditioners and shake well - about 2-3 tablespoons)
  2. Applied my leave-in conditioner, Kinky Curly Knot Today.
  3. Finger-parted my hair in small sections, starting from the back. For each section I applied a small amount of my shea butter mixture (mixed shea butter, jojoba oil and coconut oil in a small container). After applying the shea mixture, I then applied a small amount of ic Fantasia Olive Gel (for hold) and then 2-strand twisted. I did this over my entire head, it took about 50 min to an hour.
  4. Sat under the dryer for 20-30 min just to help it set and get rid of excess moisture, b/c I was going to bed soon.
  5. Untwisted in the morning - Make sure it's COMPLETELY dry when untwisting or it WILL FRIZZ! Don't rake ur fingers thru the twists, that will also cause frizz. Just pull the twists apart in 1 or 2 more sections to create fullness; fluff, and style!
Hope these tips help!! The first pic is day 1, the second pic is day 2. I just slept with a satin bonnet on last night and fluffed it up this morning.

Wise Words from my Mentor

I had to repost this. This is from my business mentor, Tishina Pettiford. She is at the TOP level in the business I am in and I'm learning so much from her. But take a look at this quote she posted on Facebook:

Tishina Pettiford - Question. Why do people say "That's good for u"? As if they don't want the same thing. Who wouldn't want to make in month what most make in a year, Make ur own schedule and drive a free Bentley? What they should say is I don't want to work for what u have. Creating success is 2 hard and I want to do what's easy for me. Which keeps me unhappy and unfullfilled. Speak the truth.

I totally agree. Don't be afraid to WORK for what you want, people. If you're interested, contact me.

Owning Your Own Business

Check this video out. I must say, I completely agree. Working a "9-5" is not going to make you wealthy. Why work so hard for something you don't own (Your job)? Change your way of thinking. I don't know about you, but I'm going to listen to someone who HAS money rather than someone who doesn't. Check out what Robert Kiyosaki of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" has to say:

Minx Nails

I finally got Minx Nails for my birthday! I absolutely love them, so I just wanted to share a pic. If you live in the DC area, I got them done at Sassy Nail Spa. They are holding up well so far, and I was told if I take care of them they'd last me 2 weeks. If you are not sure what Minx is, check out this site: Minx Nails.

What are you doing to change your life?

I think that the older we get, the more we think about this question: What am I doing to change my life? For the better, of course. We all wake up, go to work for 8+ hours, come home, do whatever we need to do there (cook/take care of children/tend to spouse or significant other), get ready for bed, and do it all again the next day. And the day after that. I, myself, feel overworked and my personality does not allow me to be "happy" sitting in a cubicle all day for 5 days a week. Don't get me wrong, I have a great job, great managers, and the pay is pretty nice. I am truly grateful for that b/c so many are struggling now especially in this economy. What I am trying to get at is, why is this the "only" way of living? A "9-5"? I want to own my own business someday, so now is the time to move toward that goal. Each day I have to do SOMETHING to work toward that, because this just isn't fulfilling. Some people are happy with their 9-5/cubicle jobs, but I need something different. And I've found it in my home based business, which I am very excited about.

So, my question is... What are YOU doing to get the most out of your life, to be happy and what is your idea/definition of success? I'd love to hear your thoughts/opinions...

Healthy Hair = GREAT Hair

Good Afternoon!

Just wanted to share a little tip. In case you missed it, I LOVE Herbal Essence Hello Hydration AND Totally Twisted conditioners. They both work very well on my hair. Here is something I've been doing to get even more from them: adding olive oil to the conditioner, and shaking it up. It gives my hair more slip and moisturizes it even better than the conditioner alone. My hair comes out REALLY soft and I only apply shea butter about every 2-3 days so it doesn't get dry. 1st pic is my twistout today, pinned up on one side. The 2nd pic is last night when I straightened a section to see the length of my hair. I will be 1 year natural on Nov. 22.

Addicted to Twitter?

OK so if any of you follow me on Twitter, and if you login daily, you KNOW that I tweet excessively. I don't know how this happened... How did I become addicted? I didn't even see it coming! Here is how you know you are addicted to Twitter (just a few signs from David Risley):

  • You’re on the FriendFeed website and find yourself refreshing the page rather than waiting for the auto-refresh. F5 is worn out.
  • You realize you need to turn off Twitter or FriendFeed to get any work done. Problem is, you “realized” that an hour ago, too.
  • You get overly excited when you get a new follower.
  • You find yourself typing “@” to reply to people, even if its in an email.
  • You are bored and confused whenever there is another Twitter outage.
  • You have Twhirl or Alert Thingy set to start automatically on boot up.
  • Your blog hasn’t been updated in awhile, but you’ve been Twittering like crazy.
  • You feel the strong need to check up on FriendFeed or Twitter before going to bed at night. Or perhaps on your laptop IN bed.
  • First thing you do when you get home from date night with the wife is check Twitter or FriendFeed.
  • You put your Twitter handle on your business card.

Here are my own signs that I've added:
- You MUST reply to all @replies throughout the day
- You repeatedly check your @replies to see who is talking to you
- You have more than one Twitter app on your phone, or more than 1 way to access Twitter via computer

I had to log out today to get some work done, y'all. It used to be Facebook that I was addicted to. Now I can barely stand it, b/c Twitter has taken over!! I guess it will fade soon... I hope!

In the meantime... ummm... follow me @1KeetaRay. LOL

More Pics from Amor Mona Event & My Puff

Here are a couple more pics from Amor Mona's Launch Party :-) And I've gotten lots of questions on how I did my puff. Here's how:

You can start on wet/damp hair that has been co-washed OR on dry hair - but I've gotten better results with wet/damp hair.

Apply a good leave-in conditioner all over and evenly (I used Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in but I've also used Kinky Curly Knot Today with just as good results).

Section your hair off, I usually start in the back, to start making twists. I do about 15-17 twists over my entire head, in rows. I don't make neat parts, I just part with my fingers.

What I use to twist: As I twist each section, I apply shea butter that I mixed with a small amount of coconut oil (softened shea butter in the microwave about 15 seconds) and mixed it together. I also have a spray bottle with half water/half Lottabody setting lotion. I spray 2-3 squirts onto the section as well. Then twist and pin with a bobby pin to hold it in place.

Once I'm done, if it's close to bedtime I'll sit under the dryer for an hour so that it isn't too wet when I go to bed. Otherwise, I let it air dry overnight. In the morning, I untwist and style - in this case I styled my hair into a puff. It's very easy and lasts all week before I wash and retwist again. I usually don't retwist my hair EVERY night, maybe every 2-3 nights depending on how much definition is lost, and I sleep with a hair bonnet on.

That's it!! Very easy and once you've done it enough, twisting takes NO time at all!!

Makeup by Amor Mona

Ladies...
I went to 2 events this past Friday and Saturday, and met 2 great ladies. The first woman I met, Ronnie, has started her own business and makes skincare and makeup products, as well as soy candles (they smell soooo good!). You can find her line on her website: Amor Mona. I also met a makeup artist who serves the DMV (DC/MD/VA areas) and the way she did my eyeshadow using Amor Mona's mineral makeup was the best! I didn't want to wash my face when I got home b/c I wanted to keep it for the next day (LOL But I did!) - that's how nice it was. The lady who did my makeup was Keshua Hunt and you can visit her website for more information, as well. Let's support our sistas!

Thanks, y'all :-)

Part 2: Whitney's Full Interview with Oprah

I couldn't post Part 1 and not give you Part 2! So in case you missed it, see below. I appreciate Whitney's honesty. She is/will definitely help someone with similar issues. I feel you can't truly be able to relate to someone and in turn help them with a specific issue if you haven't been there yourself.

OK. Now this. Wendy Williams touched on Whitney's interview on her show, The Wendy Williams Experience. I have to say that I disagree. I don't feel that Whitney blamed Bobby at all, and she IS taking responsibility and ownership for her addiction. People always will have something to say...

Whitney Houston interview with Oprah

I missed it yesterday since I was at work, but caught the entire video online. I appreciate how candid Whitney was. I think Oprah is a great interviewer, she knows the right questions to ask and can read into things very well. In case you missed it, here is Part 1. The 2nd half of the interview will air today, check your local listings.

RHOA on Ellen

In case you missed Real Housewives of Atlanta on Ellen, here is the full interview:

OK. I like the show, but I do have to agree that these women (with the exception of Kandi so far) are so phony and just stir up trouble for the sake of it. We will see how the season progresses. It's ashame how petty/catty these women are, though. :-( I think if it weren't for Lisa and Kandi, I probably wouldn't watch this season. Eh, well, entertaining nonetheless!

Oyin Handmade

I've heard so many great things about Oyin Handmade. They make hair and skincare products using natural ingredients. I've been natural for 10 months now but still haven't tried it yet. Well, today I noticed they had a sample 4-pack online for $17.50!! Good price for 4 product trial sizes (not so much samples, these are real 2-oz trial sizes). It contained: Honey Hemp Conditioner, Greg Juice leave-in spray, Shine & Define coaxing serum, and Whipped Pudding (which can be used as rich moisture on either hair or skin). Because all products are made-to-order, it will take about 2 weeks. I'll do a product review when I get the products so you all can see :-) Another plus: from what I see on their site, everything is reasonably priced and affordable!! We're talking like $8-10 for good sized amounts. I'm so ready to try all this.

For more info, visit Oyin Handmade. Also, check out this video from ScandolousBeauty with HER Oyin Handmade review!!

Tyra's Real Hair

How many watched The Tyra Show today when she unveiled her real hair (sans the weave/wigs)? I was at work, so missed it. But someone was nice enough to tweet me this pic so I could have a visual. I think her hair looks good. I understand that in the entertainment biz, people like to be more dramatic and that's fine. But her real hair is pretty darn nice, in my opinion. Thoughts?

Thinking of going natural??

Or, are you in the process of going natural? Here are some sites that have helped me in my transition, and will probably help you, too.

www.motowngirl.com
www.nappturality.com
http://mynaps.ning.com
www.curlynikki.com
www.fotki.com

BTW, Fotki is where many naturals post photos of VARIOUS hairstyles, and list products they've used to achieve different looks. I learned a lot by finding people with similar hair textures to mine & seeing what they do. There is a TON of info out there, ladies. And if you want to find more than what I've listed, Google searches are great, too!!

If you have any specific questions for me re: natural hair, transitioning, products, etc., feel free to ask me. You can email me directly: tayah97@gmail.com, or leave a comment here.

Good Health - Mental & Physical

Good Evening, Ladies and Gents :-)

Anyone who knows me well knows that I prefer the natural things over medicine/science. There were quite a few times in the past where I've gotten stressed out over things, and I feel like there certainly are ways that we can reduce stress in our lives. Mental & Physical Health is so important. No, most of us don't get to the extreme of needed psychiatric help or having to be hospitalized or anything, but we all stress out to the point where it may cause some of us to be irritable, angry, sad, depressed, and so on. So, here are a few tips that may help you to reduce the stress in your life -- they have helped me, especially during "that week" (ladies) *sorry fellas for the TMI*. OK here it is:

  • Eat breakfast in the a.m.!!! - When they said it is the most important meal of the day, they weren't lying! If I don't eat before I head out to work I am a grumpy little mess. And you don't wanna talk to me til after 12pm. LOL Besides that, if you eat breakfast you can focus better and you also won't overeat come lunchtime.
  • SLEEP! -- You need sleep. It's the way our intricate bodies are designed. People will try to tell you that they can function on like 3 or 4 hours, but they're hurting themselves in the long run. 7 - 9 hours is what the average person needs. And ladies, did you also know that a study was done where they found women who got 5 hours or less sleep per night on average weighed more than women who got more rest? I read that in Essence. Get ya sleep on!
  • Exercise!! - Yeah, I said it. Now I will admit I've slacked for the last 1.5 weeks. But from January of this year up until then I was doing aight! LOL I'm back on the wagon tomorrow, though, no fear! Typically, if you're at your ideal weight and in pretty good health, 3-4 times per week of 30 min activity will suffice. You'll need more per week if you're trying to lose weight. And do remember, use those weights! Strength training builds muscle which in turn speeds up your metabolism.
  • WATER!! -- Your body needs it to function!! 6-8 glasses per day is the recommended amount. More if you're exercising/physically active. Sometimes when we're tired or feeling sluggish, all our bodies are telling us is that we need water, mannn!
  • Take a daily walk -- Maybe walk around outside your place of business on your lunch break; take the stairs instead of the elevator; walk to the store or mall.
  • Set goals/have a plan -- Not just in your head, but put it into existence by writing it out, whether on a post-it or a journal, whatever. And place it somewhere that you'll see it everyday (or most days) to keep you focused on that goal.
Remember to take it easy. Life should be taken seriously enough, but not so seriously that you don't enjoy yourself or appreciate your blessings each and every day.

love. life.

Natural Hair Gathering - September 19, 2009

Good Morning, All!

A friend of mine is hosting a Natural Hair Gathering on September 19, 2009, from 6pm to 10pm. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend - it is in Tampa, FL. However, if you're in the area and interested, please contact Lateshia for more information. You can RSVP/contact her via her blog: MyNaps. It is a great way to meet/network with other women who share a common interest, and find other things you have in common! There will be games, contests, and prizes. So, check out the link!!! :-)

On another note, I FINALLY got my hair into a low ponytail today. That's a big deal for me. LOL I can't wait until my hair gets even BIGGER!!! What I did:
  • co-wash in the shower with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration (didn't rinse it all out when done)
  • left hair soaking wet when I got out (didn't towel dry)
  • parted and smoothed hair back with hands, applying EcoStyler gel to the top as I smoothed it down
  • pulled it back and used my black elastic ponytail holder (by Goody - no metal/plastic to "break" the hair)
  • used 3 bobby pins on the sides for a few shorter pieces that didn't wanna cooperate
I have not seen my hair back like this since early November 2008. So I'm liking it. Very simple, but again, a big deal for me. LOL

The idea is to go to Google and type in "Your First Name" and "Wants" so I would type in 'Olivia wants'. You then read off the top 5 results on Google; as long as they make sense, if not move on to the next search result.

So here goes!

KeetaRay wants...
1. a valentine
2. a light natural
3. to subscribe
4. to talk to family & friends
5. you to join her mob

This is funny. And darn it if my name isn't all over the 'net!

CORRECTION to my last post re: The President!

OKay, a friend of mine sent this correction. She watched a video on CNN WITH SOUND and it explains the real deal. I left my previous post up so you can compare both videos and see how things are easily misconstrued.

Check it:
(From my girl, Keisha) Yeah that's what I thought too. But look at this link with sound. He was introducing them to the other guy. Gotta have the sound!!! Also, check out the last little part with the dog. That one's funny.

President's Hand Shake Snubbed??

Good Morning, Readers!

A friend of mine sent me this video earlier this morning, and I just sat there watching, wide-eyed, mouth open... Was it because he is black, or because Russia and the U.S. are going through some things...?? I feel naive to thing that it's the latter... Take a look at the video and offer your thoughts.

How NOT to do a child's hair!

I found this video on a hair care forum and needless to say, folks were upset. I'm not understanding what the woman thought she was doing to this poor child's head, but take a look:

10 Random Things...

Tell your readers ten things about you that they may or may not know, but are true. Tag ten people with the award, and be sure to let them know they've been tagged (a quick comment on their blog will do). Don't forget to link back to the blogger who tagged you.

1. I don't like bugs. Most people don't, but I get REALLY upset (i.e., freak out) if I see one in my home, for example. I will not give stories/examples, to further embarrass myself. LOL!

2. I am a lipgloss fiend. I own over 60 :-o Don't judge me.

3. Even though I am in the IT Field, that isn't my passion. I'd LOVE to own a salon/spa that specialized in skin care and natural hair care. I'm working toward that goal.

4. I used to attend modeling school! Crazy -- what famous models do you know who went to "school"? I was in college at the time. It was fun, even tho I didn't need to spend that money on that!

5. I am afraid of heights in a MAJOR way. To the point where I sometimes get dizzy if I realize how high up I am and I'll start to sway! LOL but not really funny!

6. I have never been out of the country!! I must travel!!! I'm getting there...

7. I have only been in MD for 2 years but have moved 4 times. Don't ask!! ;-)

8. I secretly want to be a dancer. For real. My body just doesn't seem to move like that, though (i.e., Ciara).

9. I have become a lot less conservative as I've gotten older. Matter of fact, I don't think I am conservative at all anymore.

10. I am very particular about 2 things: sleep and food. If I am deprived of either, I am very grumpy/irritable!! Some people can function on less sleep or only eating like twice a day. Umm... you don't wanna be around me if that is the case! LOL

I tag:
Everyone who follows me :-)
Please send me a comment to let me know you did this so I can check out ur answers.

Multi-Colored Nails

So I'm a little late on this (Rihanna showed us this look back in '07) but I'm loving the multi-colored nail look. Now, being that I am 30 this is kind of juvenile so I just did this for the weekend (4th of July weekend) and will probably remove it come Sunday night. LOL But hey, why not live a little!
